Meta's Facebook and Instagram social platforms have become hot spots for selling counterfeit luxury goods around the world, harming Gucci, Chanel, and other brands. And Meta is doing everything it can to combat these counterfeit goods.
Ten years ago, eBay was the hot market for counterfeits, five years ago Amazon, and now Facebook and Instagram. Counterfeit goods on social media have damaged well-known luxury brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Fendi, and Prada.
In the research conducted from June to October 2021, the social media research company “Ghost Data” found that there was a total of 26,000 active accounts selling counterfeit luxury goods on the Facebook platform. This is also the first study about counterfeit products on Facebook.
On Instagram, 20,000 fake accounts were found, which was higher than the previous year, but lower than the peak in 2019 (56,000 fake accounts were found that year).
